FROM CLINICAL
PSYCHOLOGY: FACTS ABOUT EEG NEUROFEEDBACK
This
information is provided for those wishing to learn more about neurotherapy
(alternatively known as neurofeedback), its uses, applications, and the
health conditions for which it has been proven efficacious.
Are you aware?
Neurotherapy and psychological counseling of youngsters with ADD and ADHD
most often results in improved behaviors and grades in school with a
significant reduction in Ritalin, Adderal, or Concerta dosages after 4 to 6
months of 1 to 2 weekly neurotherapy sessions. Many clients of
neurotherapy providers report lasting positive effects after completing a
course of neurofeedback training provided by a qualified and competent
practitioner.
ADHD children (and adults) who do not easily tolerate psychoactive
"stimulant" drugs like Ritalin, can find a proven, side effect free,
evidence based treatment in neurotherapy and psychological counseling as the
modality for arbitrating these conditions?
Follow up
of successfully treated ADD and ADHD patients 3 to 5 years after treatment
revealed no relapse, regression, or long term ill effects. Patients in the
group reported improved schoolwork effectiveness combined with better
interpersonal and social functioning skills with less feelings of social
isolation, which are often associated with maladaptive hyperactive
behaviors. Thus, with neurotherapy, functional difficulties in these
spheres diminished and social and academic performance improved...and the
best part is that it’s durable.
We highly recommend that all our clients do a Web search. Read up on the
subject of Neurotherapy, Neurofeedback, and EEG Biofeedback and check the
current literature for new studies. Be skeptical. You will very likely be
pleasantly surprised at the safety, efficacy, and long lasting effects and
beneficial outcomes from the use of EEG-guided neurotherapy and
psychological counseling approaches. There have recently been over 1600
articles reported in reputable, peer reviewed, scientific journals, and
publications showing the positive effects of quantitative EEG and
neurotherapy.
ADD and ADHD are but two example conditions where neurotherapy has been
successfully employed to reduce negative symptoms and improve behaviors and
grades. There are a few other conditions that may substantially benefit
clinically and functionally from neurotherapy and psychological counseling,
including vascular dementia, depression, epilepsy, Asperger’s, and autistic
spectrum disorder (ASD). Additionally, neurofeedback has been shown to be
highly effective at improving memory, attention, and reaction times,
typically improving neuropsych tests scores by 10 points or more.
Neurotherapy, however, is not a self-help activity where you can buy a book
and treat yourself or your kids. The human brain is quite complex and a
trained professional counselor, clinical psychologist, or medical doctor
should provide the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions.
